On Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars visited the Houston Texans and struggled to have much positive production as they lost 37-21. The game’s score does not tell the story, as the visual aspect of the matchup was even worse. Rookie Head Coach Urban Meyer and rookie Quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s first game in teal and black was forgettable. There was hardly anything to get excited about as the team had over ten penalties and three turnovers. The defense allowed Texans QB Tyrod Taylor to do almost anything he wanted, and wide receiver Brandin Cooks had an outstanding game with five receptions for 132 yards.

However, it is only the first game, so it may not be time to hit the panic button just yet. Trevor Lawrence threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in his debut, and there were some excellent moments for the team. The key moving forward will be to become a more disciplined football team by committing fewer penalties and better play calling on offense and defense. Both of those responsibilities fall on the coaching staff. They must change some things, and there’s no reason to think they won’t.

Next week, the Jaguars will host the Denver Broncos for the team’s home opener. This should be an exciting matchup due to the Broncos’ stout defense and competent offensive play they showed against the New York Giants in Week 1. However, it’s important to stay cautious as a Jags fan and understand that the game will likely be ugly again. It will likely be a long season with massive growing pains in the form of losses. Hopefully, moving forward, the Jaguars can lead their way into a few wins after working on improving their craft throughout the season.

Finally, Jags fans need to remember that the legendary former Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jimmie Johnson went 1-15 in his first year as an NFL coach, with Troy Aikman having a rough rookie season as well. Those two went on to win three Super Bowls together and are both members of The Pro Football Hall of Fame. Patience is key.
